Prince Albert was founded in 1762 on a farm called Queekvalleij. Originally known as Albertsburg. When it obtained municipal status in 1845 it was renamed Prince Albert in honour of Queen Victoria's consort as Prince Albert of Saxe-Coburg. Prince Albert was historically part of the Cape Colony.
Prince Albert district has a rich heritage of Later Stone Age (LSA) sites, stone tools and rock paintings. Many of which date back 25000 years. Boomplaas Cave on the Swartberg Pass provides evidence of the middle stone age people.
Something interesting: The name Karoo is derived from a Khoikhoi word Karusa meaning "dry arid place".

It was the final project of famous South African road builder extraordinaire, Thomas Bain. Completed in 1888 over a period of 7 years, it's quite long as passes go, at 23.8 km.
